The Stations of the Cross

The Way of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross, also known as The Way of the Cross, began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary.  Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every Catholic Church.

The 14 stations commemorate Jesus Christ's last day on earth as a man. Good Friday is the actual day that these events of Jesus Christ's final hours occurred.

The goal of this devotion is to “walk” in Jesus’ shoes by praying and meditating on each of the events (stations) that Jesus experienced. When we meditate on the Stations of the Cross, we can learn the true meaning of love, perseverance, obedience, humility, and patience.

The 14 Stations of the Cross

  1. Jesus is condemned to death
  2. The cross is laid upon Jesus
  3. Jesus falls for the first time
  4. Jesus meets His mother
  5. Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross
  6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
  7. Jesus falls the second time
  8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
  9. Jesus falls the third time.
  10. Jesus is stripped of His garments.
  11. Jesus is nailed to the cross.
  12. Jesus dies on the cross
  13. The body of Jesus is taken down from the cross.
  14. Jesus is laid in the tomb.

Reflective: Stations of the Cross

He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.  For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it..."

Mark 8: 34-35
