Saint Michael the Archangel
Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Boston. Hudson, Massachusetts
"Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time…It includes three degrees of order: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1536).
Bishops, priests and
deacons are essential to the Catholic Church because we believe that they continue the work begun by the apostles.
The Archdiocese of Boston is the fourth largest archdiocese in the United States and is the spiritual home for more than 1.8 million Catholics.
Until October 2024, Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley, OFM Cap., led the Archdiocese through unprecedented events with a focus on healing and rebuilding the local Church.
In August 2024, His Holiness Pope Francis named Archbishop Richard Henning, S.T.D. (Sacred Theologiae Doctor, "Doctor of Sacred Theology") as Cardinal O'Malley's successor. He was installed on October 31, 2024.
The teaching authority of the Church comes from Christ himself, who extended this authority to Saint Peter and the Apostles; they, in turn, have passed it down through Apostolic Succession to the Popes and bishops of every age.
