More and more families seem to be choosing "celebration of life" events at funeral homes over traditional Masses.  They do not seem to understand why the Mass is so important to Catholics -- particularly at the time of death.

Liturgy invites everyone to be prepared to celebrate in a prayerful and meaningful way the life of the deceased within the context of faith and hope in Christ.  It is a time to express grief and sadness, yet the sadness is not like the sadness of those who do not have hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13).  The celebration of funeral rites brings comfort and consolation. 

The rituals of the church are expressions of our hope for those who have died and for those of us who remain and await our call to eternal life.
