Today we gather to celebrate Palm Sunday after a very eventful Lenten Season. The snow is disappearing and the temperatures are a bit warmer. Maybe spring really is just around the corner!
Each year, as we come to this time in our liturgical calendar, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the most sacred celebrations in our year. We journey with Jesus on His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, among palm branches and praise from all those lining the pathways; we proceed to the very moving events of Holy Thursday. Jesus says His sad and painful farewell to His apostles, and out of both his human and divine person, asks them not to forget Him but to remember Him each time they gather for the breaking of the bread. We celebrate the institution of the Eucharist that night as Jesus serves His apostles, washing their feet and feeding them his life giving bread.
We walk with Him to the garden and His intense agony over the impending physical and emotional suffering. Good Friday dawns as the memorial of His Passion and Crucifixion . And all day Holy Saturday, we wait with His early followers as He is laid in the tomb.
Easter Sunday breaks forth as the wonder and the mystery of the Resurrection happens. Death no longer has power over Jesus – or over us because of Him. Darkness is shattered and New Light brightens our world.
All the symbols we employ at the Easter Vigil point to the wonder of this day: fire, light, Word, and water. We have been saved!
Why not come and join the journey of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. Allow the mystery to touch you and bring a renewal of the New Life of the Resurrection!
