TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SEPTEMBER 28, 2014
Every relationship demands knowledge of one another. When two people fall in love, for example, they hunger to find out every detail about their beloved. They talk for hours getting to know each other and then treasure that knowledge. That is how a relationship is built.
Our relationship with God is no different. God tells us numerous times in the scriptures that He knows us through and through; every hair of our heads he counts; not a thing happens to us that God is not aware of or cares about.
On the other hand, our coming to know God is a lifelong process. Once we are smitten by His love for us, we too are hungry to know as much as we can about God. Our responsorial psalm today begins by praying: Your ways o Lord make known to me; teach me your paths. That needs to be our prayer each time we pick up a scripture passage.
The Bible is called Divine Revelation. The scriptures therefore are not about us as much as they are about God. God is constantly revealing to us His ways; who He is and who He is not.
After many years we may think that we know the Lord pretty well. And our relationships with Him are built upon that. But God is always ready to surprise us, to deepen our love for Him, to make the bonds of that relationship stronger and stronger.
And every experience of our lives is a new opportunity for God to show us how He is present in our lives; how He feels about us; how He wants to provide what we need. In doing so we get to know God a little better each day.
So when we turn to prayer, God certainly wants to know what we need; but we also must remember that God is not passive but actively involved in our lives and wants to keep revealing Himself to us.
Your ways O lord make known to me; show me your paths.
