This weekend we celebrate the wonderful Feast of the Transfiguration. Jesus takes his three beloved apostle, Peter, James and John, to the mountaintop . While they are there, Jesus is transfigured along with Moses and Elijah. This was clearly Jesus showing His divine nature to these select apostles.
At first it would seem the apostles were bewildered and frightened. But Peter soon realizes the wonder and the goodness of the event. He goes so far as to propose that they set up tents for these heavenly figures in order to make the experience last.
It was however to be but a glimpse of the divine for them. As soon as it happens it seems that the experience is over and they are left bewildered again. Jesus cautions them not to tell the others about this as I suspect it would be too much for them to understand or grasp. Only after the resurrection and the coming of the Spirit would that happen.
Throughout the scriptures God continually reveals more and more of who He is. His desire is that we come to know Him as fully as possible in order to be the beneficiaries of his goodness and love. Gd continues that revelation of Himself even today as we come to gradually know Him more and more.
Next weekend we will celebrate at our parish picnic how God has gathered us together in community to know Him and to praise Him all our days. We hope you can join us for this celebration!
