EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
AUGUST 6, 2017
All life is a series of transformations. We are transformed chronologically from infancy to adulthood to old age. We are transformed psychologically from unconsciousness to awareness to hopefully the wisdom of age. Relationships and circumstances and experiences change us as well along the way.
Today’s gospel reading is likewise about a transformation. Jesus at the top of the mountain is transformed into a dazzling image of his divine self. The apostles present with him are mesmerized and even baffled by what they see and experience. But Jesus clearly wants them to see Him as not just another person, but as god come down to earth to accomplish His plan of salvation. Although Jesus walked with them every day, they did not fully grasp His divine self until they saw this spectacular transformation which took place before their very eyes.
I think Jesus also wants us to look within and to see the divine which lives in each of us. God has entered within us, He has light up the light of faith and sees the potential within us. God calls for our transformation into the people He has created us to be.
May we continue to grow and be transformed and become all that we can be in His great love for us.
