EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINRY TIME
JULY 31, 2016
Jesus tells a great parable today about a rich land owner who had a bumper harvest. His land produced so much that he had nowhere to store it all. He finally decides to rebuild his barns and expand them to accommodate his large crop.
Then Jesus says that the man sat back and reveled in all that he had – eat drink and be merry for many years to come. But that very night the man dies and all that he had amassed was left behind for others.
The bottom line here is that Jesus is inviting us all to step back and to recognize what is truly important about life, what is worth holding onto, and what needs to be let go.
For some that may be wealth and riches. But there are so many more things that we can a mass in the storage areas in our hearts. Some people like to hold onto all the slights they have experienced in life; others like to horde their anger and let it spill out all over the place; others hold onto their insecurities and their jealousies - everyone is better than they are. Some hold onto fear and worry, unable to trust in the future.
Then there are those who hold onto and treasure what lasts into eternity: the loving relationships of life, the desire to help others and make life better for them; to listen to God’s words and encouragements and to share them with those who need them. In other words, they grow rich in what matters to God and that is what will lead them into eternity and the kingdom of heaven.
