This weekend as we celebrate the Fourth of July/ Independence Day, we pause as we do each year, to reflect on the wonderful freedoms we have as a nation. It is so easy to take all that for granted. !
Recent terrorist attacks in our country highlight our need to be vigilant and to ensure that our values as a nation are reinforced and retained. In so many parts of the world, freedom and equality are merely words. We have a long tradition in America that makes these principals a reality. Every one of us benefits from this and have the obligation to affirm them in our lives in whatever way we can.!
Huge celebrations take place across the country. The vast number of people who flock to our own outdoor Esplanade to listen to music and to watch fireworks attests to our sense of gratitude.!
Many people will be having their own private barbecues and local fireworks will be popping up all over.! Fr. Bob and I are planning our annual get together in Uxbridge where we will be cooking up ribs and corn and all the fixings.!
Our African priest, Fr. William Sinkala, arrived on Thursday, June 30. He will be joining us in Uxbridge for a true American celebration (with two dogs!). If you see him this weekend be sure to give him the traditional St. Michael’s welcome. He will be with us until the end of August and I hope many of you will take time to help show him around.!
