SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 30, 2017
In every age people have been in search of buried treasures. In own day people seek their fortune at the casino or in the lottery. The presumption is that if we make it big, we’ll be happy and content.
Today’s scripture readings however define that pearl of great price that buried treasure in a very different way. In the first reading, Solomon asks God for his treasure – he asks for a wise and understanding heart. The heart of course in the language of the bible refers to the uniquely human functions of feeling and thinking and deciding. That understanding heart enabled King Solomon to rule his people with justice and equality.
In the Gospel reading Jesus uses the parable of the buried treasure and the pearl of great price. He says when someone finds that treasure they sell all they have in order to buy it because it is beyond price.
And what then is that hidden treasure? Jesus says it is the kingdom of God – not so much a place as an awareness of what is really important in life and how to live a life that is valuable. Jesus teaches that important lesson over and over again during His own lifetime among us. He shows us that relationships are primary and through them we come to know God as well as one another, He demonstrates that giving of ourselves and caring about each other are the way to God’s kingdom.
May we all find that hidden treasure, that pearl of great price and live lives to the fullest.
