SEVENTEETH SUNDAY IN ORDINRY TIME
JULY 23/24, 2016
One of the things that the scriptures teach us often is how to pray. Since prayer is the way in which we communicate with God, it is important for us to learn how. In today’s readings we learn some things that seem essential to our communicating with God.
In the first reading as we listen to Abraham bargaining with God to save the town of Sodom from destruction, we see that God listens to him and is willing to spare the town for the sake of ten people.
In the gospel reading Jesus’ apostles ask him to teach them how to pray. Not only does Jesus give them the Our Father but goes on to reiterate that God listens and will provide what is good and needed by His people. “What Father gives his son a snake when he asks for a fish”?
In both readings we see the value of being persistent and consistent in our prayers, confident that God hears us. Like Abraham we are encouraged to come before God, to present to Him our needs, and open our ears and our hearts to hear His response.
Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
