TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SEPTEMEBER 26/27, 2015
As I read through today’s Gospel reading I kept getting images of Pope Francis as he moved about the country these past couple of days. That may be because I watched the coverage almost non stop on Thursday and Friday. But what Jesus is talking about is surely the same kind of message Francis has been speaking.
Today Jesus talks about these little ones – as he did last weekend when he took a child aside and spoke of the greatness of the little ones. Francis continually stops to give special greetings and blessing to the children he encounters. His whole expression lights up with warmth and love as he reaches out his hands to them over and over again.
She also says in today’s gospel “If you give one of these a cup of water in the name of Christ, you will have your reward” How often in all his sermons has Francis talked about those who are hungry and thirsty, the poor and marginalized and the message of care and concern which the gospel echoes? His worldwide perspective gives him a first hand experience with that poverty so prevalent in our world.
The final thing in our gospel and our first reading focuses on inclusiveness. In the first reading the spirit of God descends unexpectedly on two men outside the gathering; and in the Gospel people were using Jesus name to do good. In both instances it was reported to Moses and Jesus. They both respond that God’s grace is not limited and that God can empower whoever HE wishes to spread the gospel message.
How very much that is like Pope Francis. He continually speaks about and reaches out to those who may not be in the fold. HE even asked non-believers to send him their well wishes as he promised to pray for all people.
I pray that the way the pope’s visit has touched so many people will gladden our hearts; help us to recommit ourselves to Jesus and the gospel; and will soften the hearts of many to bring God’s love and compassion to those most in need.
